What Are East African Manufacturers Budgeting for New Technology?

POSTED: 4th Nov

A new machine can increase production capacity. Automation can improve consistency. Better equipment can reduce waste and help a factory meet changing customer demands. But before any investment is approved, one question comes first: how much is the business prepared to spend?

For manufacturers across East Africa, investment in new technology is not simply about acquiring the latest equipment. It is about identifying where production needs improvement, weighing the cost against expected returns, and choosing solutions that can support long-term business growth.

Propak East Africa's visitor research offers an insight into the investment capacity of businesses looking for machinery, equipment and manufacturing supplies. The figures reveal a market with different levels of purchasing power, from smaller businesses working within tighter budgets to companies planning substantial capital investments.

What are manufacturers budgeting?

The 2026 Propak East Africa visitor research shows a broad range of annual machinery and supplies investment budgets.

The findings reveal that:

56% of visitors reported annual investment budgets of US$50,000 or below.

26% reported budgets between US$50,001 and US$250,000.

9% reported budgets between US$250,000 and US$500,000.

6% reported annual investment budgets of US$1 million or more.

These figures point to a varied buyer market. While a significant proportion of visitors operate within relatively modest investment budgets, there is also a commercially important group with the capacity to consider larger investments.

The figures also show why technology suppliers need to understand the different purchasing requirements within the region. A solution that suits a small or medium-sized manufacturer may not meet the requirements of a larger production facility, and the investment conversation will differ accordingly.

The decision is about value, not just price.

For manufacturers, purchasing new technology involves more than comparing equipment prices.

A production line may offer higher output, but businesses also need to consider installation costs, operating requirements, maintenance, energy consumption, spare parts and the availability of technical support.

The financial decision often comes down to what the investment will deliver over time. Will it improve production consistency? Can it reduce material waste? Will it help the business meet growing demand or improve product quality?

These considerations are particularly important for businesses operating with limited capital. Where investment budgets are tighter, equipment needs to demonstrate a clear commercial purpose.

For suppliers, this means presenting more than technical specifications. Demonstrating how a machine addresses a particular production challenge, alongside its expected operating costs and support requirements, can help buyers assess its value.

Who decides how much a factory invests?

Technology purchases are rarely made by one person alone.

Propak East Africa's visitor research shows that 48% of visitors make purchasing decisions directly, while a further 35% influence those decisions. This means 83% of visitors have purchasing authority or influence.

However, the final decision often involves several departments.

Company directors and business owners consider the wider strategic value of an investment. Finance teams assess affordability, cash flow and expected returns. Procurement compares suppliers, prices and delivery arrangements, while production and technical teams evaluate whether the equipment meets operational requirements.

This makes the purchasing process a collaborative one. Suppliers who understand the concerns of each stakeholder are better positioned to demonstrate how their technology fits the business.

Beyond the machine: the importance of after-sales support

The value of manufacturing technology does not end when equipment is delivered and installed.

Access to spare parts, trained technicians, operator training and responsive maintenance support can influence how effectively a business uses its investment. A machine that remains out of operation while waiting for technical assistance can affect production schedules and delivery commitments.

For manufacturers, after-sales support should therefore be considered as part of the original purchasing decision, rather than an additional service to think about later.

For technology suppliers entering or expanding within East Africa, the ability to provide reliable local or regional support can be an important part of their offering.

Where are manufacturers finding their next investment opportunities?

As manufacturing businesses assess their next equipment purchases, having access to the right suppliers and technologies becomes increasingly important.

Seeing equipment first-hand, comparing available solutions and discussing specific production requirements can help businesses make more informed decisions. It also creates an opportunity for manufacturers to explore technologies they may not have previously considered.

This is where industry exhibitions play an important role.

Propak East Africa brings together manufacturers, equipment suppliers, technology providers and industry professionals across packaging, plastics, printing and food and beverage processing. It provides a meeting point for businesses looking to explore new solutions, discuss operational challenges and identify opportunities for growth.

Taking place from 2–4 March 2027 at Sarit Expo Centre, Nairobi, Propak East Africa will give visitors the opportunity to meet suppliers, explore the latest technologies and have conversations that can inform their next investment decisions.
