Where Packaging Demand Is Outrunning Supply in East Africa

POSTED: 7th Oct

The gap is not about appetite. It is about what happens inside the factory.

Walk through any supermarket in Nairobi, Kampala or Dar es Salaam and the demand for packaging is easy to see. Beverages, dairy, snacks, household goods and medicines all depend on it. Yet many of the companies that fill those shelves report the same frustration: getting the right packaging, in the right volume, on time, is harder than it should be.

The constraint is seldom a lack of demand or ambition. It is capacity, quality and support, and each of the three can be addressed.

Capacity comes from consistency

A converter can have a full order book and still be unable to take on more work if its lines stop and start. Raising output does not always mean building a bigger plant. Often it means handling material better, with automated storage, conveying, drying and dosing that keep production steady and waste low.

This is the field PiovanGroup works in. The company designs and installs automation systems for the storage, transport and treatment of polymers and food powders, including PET and rPET applications.

Recycled content rewards precision

Brand owners are asking more of their packaging suppliers, and recycled content is increasingly part of that conversation. Recycled material is less forgiving than virgin resin, and processing it well takes tighter control at every stage. The suppliers who master that early will serve customers that others cannot.

Equipment is only as good as the support behind it

A machine that waits weeks for a spare part is a machine that is not producing. Trained technicians, available spares and maintenance that anticipates problems decide whether a plant meets its delivery dates. These services sit alongside the equipment in Piovan's offering, which includes help desk support, spare parts, training and predictive maintenance.

Closing the gap takes conversations

None of this resolves through machinery alone. It resolves when buyers, converters and technology suppliers sit across from each other, test assumptions and make decisions with the facts in front of them. That is the purpose of Propak East Africa.

PiovanGroup will be exhibiting at Propak East Africa as a special sponsor. Visitors who want to understand what automation could change on their own lines will have the chance to speak with their team directly.

Propak East Africa runs from 2 to 4 March 2027 at Sarit Expo Centre, Nairobi. If these are the questions your business is asking, the people who can answer them will be in the room. Register to visit at https://connect.propakeastafrica.com/register.
